Deadline Soon for Next Round of B.I.G. Grants

Spotsylvania, VA – May 28, 2013 — The premise of the Business Incentive Grant (BIG) program is to create quality employment opportunities and expand the tax base by offering new or expanding small businesses cash grants to partially defray the costs associated with start-up operations or expansion projects, thereby freeing business capital at a time when it is most urgently needed. This Economic Development Authority (EDA)/small business partnership benefits the Spotsylvania County through an increased tax base, expanded job opportunities, and increased payroll in the Spotsylvania community.

Requests for Proposals Sought in Sale of Spotsylvania EDA Building

Spotsylvania County’s Economic Development Authority is seeking REQUESTS FOR PROPOSALS from prospects who want to buy an EDA-owned building in the Southpoint I shopping center.

The EDA has owned the 8,600-square-foot building since 2002. Some of the space is leased to an insurance company, a regional public safety non-profit, a marketing and Internet company and the county’s visitors center.

The EDA will consider all proposals, and is looking for uses that create jobs and generate property taxes. The property is assessed at about $1.3 million. Deadline for submissions is Friday, July 19, 2013 at 5:00pm.

MAA Paid $48.9M for Haven Apartment Complex in Spotsylvania

Real estate investment trust MAA paid about $48.9 million for The Haven at Cosner’s Corner apartment complex in Spotsylvania, according to county property records.

MAA bought the 33.6-acre complex Tuesday from South Carolina-based Johnson Development Associates. The community has been renamed Station Square at Cosner’s Corner, a nod to the Virginia Railway Express station that will be built just down U.S. 17 from the complex.

The deal was done in two separate transactions. MAA paid $44.64 million for the 260 apartments that have already been developed and that are about 75 percent leased. The REIT paid $4.25 million for the undeveloped land where the second phase of the apartment community will be built.

State Tourism Office Selects Spotsylvania County

The Virginia Tourism Corporation has chosen Spotsylvania County as one of 16 sites across the state to build and promote a giant LOVEwork. The LOVEwork structures are the focal point of a social media campaign to share the message that love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation. Spotsylvania County will join with 20 other existing LOVEwork sculptures found across the state featured on www.virginia.org/LOVE as part of the Virginia is for Lovers tourism marketing campaign.

Spotsylvania County resident Hunter C. Perkinson Jr., owner of Featherstone Forge was chosen to construct the 17 foot by 6 foot metal LOVEwork. Perkinson also designed and produces the Governor Spotswood Award given annually in March.

Visitors will be encouraged to take a picture with the LOVEwork and share on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Photos taken by people from throughout the world can be seen on at www.Facebook.com/VirginiaisforLovers and on Twitter by searching #LOVEVA.

“Virginia is for Lovers is about love – pure and simple, and has been for more than 40 years,” said Rita McClenny, president and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. “This program uses the power of social media to promote Virginia as an ideal destination for families looking to completely connect on a Virginia vacation.”

The Spotsylvania County LOVEwork will receive $1,200 in reimbursement funding from the state tourism office. The LOVEwork will be unveiled on May 3rd at the kick-off of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Chancellorsville. The structure is portable and will be placed at different locations in the county throughout the year.

“We are proud to be one of the first in our area to be chosen to have a LOVEwork structure,” said Debbie Aylor, Spotsylvania County Tourism Manager. “We know that tourists and residents alike will “love” to have their picture taken with the LOVEwork and share it on social media,” she added.

150th Anniversary: The Battle of Chancellorsville Website Launch

On May 3-5, 2013, the Chancellorsville campaign will return to Spotsylvania, 150 years after the original battle.

We’re proud to introduce the new Battle of Chancellorsville reenactment website. Here you’ll find information ranging from historical facts about the battle to how you can purchase tickets to the event. You can even sponsor an artillery unit or become a volunteer!

Spotsylvania EDA awards $32,500 in BIG grants

Spotsylvania’s Economic Development Authority last week awarded grants totaling $32,500 to three businesses for expansion projects in the county.

Freeland Engineering received $10,000 to expand its Courthouse Road facility. Sunny’s Eco-Wash, which is outside the Spotsylvania Towne Centre, got $2,500 for an expansion. Vista Eye Specialists received $20,000 to acquire equipment for its new office in the Westpark Corporate Center.

Old Dominion Speedway plans to relocate to Spotsylvania County

The owner of a stock-car and drag-racing facility near Manassas plans to relocate the complex to a 160-acre site just off Interstate 95 in Thornburg.

Steve Britt, principal owner of the Old Dominion Speedway, is under contract to purchase land just north of Mudd Tavern Road from a man who lives outside the Fredericksburg area. The sale is contingent on various government approvals, including a rezoning and special-use permit from Spotsylvania County.

The new facility will be called the Dominion Raceway and will be easily visible from I–95. The main entrance will be off Mudd Tavern Road near the northbound ramp onto 95.

Britt wants to create a racing-focused entertainment complex that could also be used year-round for festivals, karting, collector car auctions, drive-in movies and other special events. Though he hasn’t spoken with a local group pursuing a minor league baseball stadium, he thinks that could be part of it.

Local Eye Surgeon Buys Office and Expands Services

Fredericksburg-area ophthalmologist Dr. Binoy Jani last month purchased an office suite off State Route 3 in Spotsylvania County that will serve as his company’s new local home.

Jani runs Vista Eye Specialists, which also has a Culpeper office that will be unaffected by the purchase. Jani will move his local office out of its current subleased location near Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg after the new office is ready, perhaps sometime in November.

Spotsylvania Towne Centre wins national award for holiday event

The Spotsylvania Towne Centre has received a national award from the International Council of Shopping Centers for its Concert in Lights event.

The computer-synchronized holiday music and light show at the outdoor Village section of the shopping complex received a silver U.S. MAXI Award, which recognizes “excellence and innovation in retail marketing.”

New Restaurant and Lounge Opens in Spotsylvania

A new restaurant and lounge called Kabab City opened this past weekend at 10681 Spotsylvania Ave. near a Food Lion store in the Lee’s Hill Commercial Center.

Kabab City serves Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine for lunch and dinner seven days a week. The establishment also features a hookah bar and live entertainment on weekend nights, when it stays open until 3 a.m. One side of the business features the restaurant, while the other has more of a lounge feel.
