LRH Group Sponsors Fundraiser in Support of the Wounded Warrior Cyber Combat Academy (W2CCA)

April 24, 2014

301_w2cca_background The Quantico Potomac Chapter of ACFEA hosted an event with General Keith B. Alexander (Ret), former Director of the National Security Agency and Commander of the US Cyber Command.  General Alexander was joined by BGen Nally, Director C4 and CIO of the Marine Corps and Dr. Ron Ross, a Fellow with the National Institute of Science and Technology for an industry mixer to discuss the future of cyber and the importance of training future cyber warriors. All proceeds from the event went to support the W2CCA, an organization whose mission is to build the next generation of cyber defenders by cross-training the league of wounded warriors to help protect and defend the Nation’s information systems.

Over 70 people gathered at the Globe and Laurel in Stafford, VA including four Wounded Warrior Marines who are enrolled in the pilot program.  “We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from the Quantico Potomac Chapter of AFCEA.  I have never seen these guys smile so much,” commented Sam Maroon, W2CCA Co-Founder.

“All of our military leaders present were incredibly gracious with the students and General Alexander sent introductory emails to the NSA Human Resources Department while at the event.  He even gave each student his personal email address if they needed assistance securing employment,” said Wendy Maurer, AFCEA-QP Board Member, event organizer and President of LRH Group.

“Having General Alexander, General Nally and Dr. Ron Ross in the same place was a huge thrill for our students,” commented Jim Wiggins, the FITSI Foundation’s executive director.  “With the cyber battlefield being the next frontier where the military has to dominate, it was great for the students to hear from these three cyber thought leaders what a great career choice they’ve made to continue serving their country.”

The event was an excellent opportunity to raise awareness and much needed funding.  It costs approximately $10,000 to train each Wounded Warrior and AFCEA-QP has generously contributed $25,000 to the program.  Currently, the W2CCA board members are donating personal time and resources to support the first class, known as Cyber Team 1, but there is a waiting list of over fifty candidates.

The W2CCA mission is to build the next generation of cyber defenders by cross-training the league of wounded warriors to help protect and defend the Nation’s information systems.  The FITSI Foundation works with the Walter Reed Transition Center to find the right candidates for an intensive 18 month program that leverages certifications from CompTIA, SCP, ISC2, FITSI and EC-Council to build a ladder of training and certification in offensive security. The program also includes a hands-on assessment which acts as the capstone for the project and several government agencies assist the students in building professional experience through internship programs.  The program is working with its first pilot program of students and all are employed in the cyber field.  More information can be found at www.w2cca.org.

October 18, 2012

George AllenThe topic on everyone’s mind was sequestration. Ms. Maurer offered a unique perspective as a Board Member for the Stafford County Economic Development Authority and Defense Contractor.  From the Wall Street Journal article,  “Wendy Maurer, a board member of the Stafford Economic Development Authority who works in the defense community, told me that the sequester was already having a “devastating” effect in her Virginia county near Washington. Contractors, uncertain of what will come, are pulling back, she says. Commercial real estate is sitting empty. Companies aren’t hiring. Employees are putting off buying a house or a car.”  Read more from the Wall Street Journal’s “Going on the Offense about Defense”  http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10000872396390444734804578064962703728302
