2012's CCHOAA
WINNER:
Judith "Judy" G. Thames
Judith (Judy) G. Thames—an extraordinary
advocate for older Floridians for more than 40
years!
An Orlando resident since 1965,
Judy retired in 2000 after decades of planning,
program development and senior service
management including her most recent position as
the Executive Director/CEO of the Senior
Resource Alliance (the Area Agency on Aging for
Central Florida).
Among
her many accomplishments, Judy helped to develop
the first Meals on Wheels program in Orange
County. Judy has continued her advocacy efforts
into retirement as a visible and tireless
community and state volunteer activist.
She is
the Immediate Past Florida State President for
AARP where, among other achievements, she
successfully advocated for social impact issues
such as transportation and mobility programs for
older drivers including obtaining the first ITN
(Independent Transportation Network) program in
Florida with all volunteer drivers. She has
testified before the State legislature on
long-term care and nursing home quality control
issues and on older driver legislation.
Her
leadership on the Board of the Winter Park
Health Foundation, and as Vice President of
Life@UCF, a life long learning program for older
adults at the University of Central Florida (her
alma mater) demonstrate her fervent commitment
to ensuring that older Floridians are able to
enjoy healthy, involved and productive lives.
She has had a lasting positive impact on the
lives of countless older Floridians who have
been affected by policies and programs she has
influenced.
She has
been described by her colleagues as relentless,
earnest and passionate and a champion for the
needs of older persons at local, state and
national levels. She has inspired people of all
ages to serve their communities and to plan
ahead for a longer and better life.
Judy
Thames embodies the true spirit of the C.
Colburn Hardy Older Advocate Award, which is
Florida's highest recognition of volunteer
advocacy on behalf of older persons. We wish her
warm congratulations and many more years of
success and service!
