John L.
Stokesberry,
former Director of the Alliance for Aging, the Federal Area
Agency on Aging for Miami-Dade & Monroe Counties,
has had a rich, varied and passionate career in the service of
the people of Florida.
In his 40-year career,
he has served as State Director of the Office of Aging & Adult
Services in Tallahassee during a crucial four-year period, and
was an HRS District Administrator in three of the original
eleven districts.
From 1968 to 1971, Mr. Stokesberry was Executive Director of
the Dade County Assn. of Retarded Citizens; 1971-73,
Director of Programs and Services, as well as Interim
Superintendent of the Sunland Training Center, District XI (DHRS);
1973-76, Regional
Retardation Director,
District X;
1976-79,
District Program Manager, District X; 1979-80,
District Administrator,
DHRS, Pensacola, FI; 1980-81, District Administrator,
Jacksonville, 1981-84, State Director, A&AS, Tallahassee;
1984-87, District Administrator, DHRS, Ft.
Lauderdale; 1988-91, Adjunct Professor, Institute for the
Study of Aging, Nova University,
Ft.
Lauderdale, and Project
Director,
Center on Aging and Developmental Disabilities, University of
Miami School of Medicine. From 1992 to the present, he has
been a Director of Special Projects, Dade County Emergency
Management.
Mr.
Stokesberry also served from 1987
through
1992 as President of Aging Dynamics, Inc., and
President of FEISTY (Florida's
Elderly Service to Youth, Inc.).
John’s
many professional associations and appointments include the
American
Society on Aging; the National Council on Aging; the American
Society for Public Administration; the American Association on
Mental Deficiency; the Editorial Board of The Journal of
Applied Gerontology;
the Institute of Government Policy Council of the Florida
Board of Regents; and the Board of Directors and Trustees of
the Greater Miami Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was
the U.S. Coordinator, International Committee on Elder Abuse,
Toronto, Canada, and an Official Observer at the 1995 White
House Conference on Aging. John is also a special projects
officer in the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol. John
was also the recipient of the 2005 C. Colburn Hardy Older
Advocate Award.
Mr.
Stokesberry, a native Miamian, earned his B.S. in
Secondary Education and a M.Ed. from
The University of Florida in 1959. He is married and has two
children and five
grandchildren.
