As a personal principle, I have always strived to maintain strict objectivity; and one does not compromise on such things. It is satisfying; and it always worked in my career in Army, State Department, and Joint Command assignments for 28 years. Strict objectivity doesn’t mean I don’t take sides on issues; only that I go where the evidence leads me. It is leading me to break a self-imposed code of silence on partisan matters.
The worlds of military strategy and China, both of which I studied and taught at multiple levels, provide perspectives not available in textbooks to compare different locales.
Wherever the government sent me, I always joined local groups to further their goals, – not mine, or what I thought theirs ought to be.
Twenty years in Culpeper, Ruritan, Germanna Foundation, and Culpeper’s unique alphabet soup – JUMC, JCC, SPCH, and CCC – have provided greater insight into this County and its people than any other place I have lived in the world. It is a very special place. I have taken particular interest in its history, which is not simply unique, but a classic key to Virginia and US history. As an outsider, I can never fully relate, but I appreciate Culpeper for what it is.
Using my training to research and analyze Culpeper proposals has drawn me to 98% of Board of Supervisor public hearings over the last 12 years, prompted direct interaction with them in over a 100 presentations, and dozens of analytical studies. My goal has not been power, fame, or fortune, but rather to provide information and documentation that could help my adopted home. I have not always agreed with the Supervisors’ decisions. But I respected them, recognizing that their span of knowledge was always greater than mine.
In this process, I have been privileged to meet and work with many genuine Culpeper leaders: selfless, talented, dedicated. We have had many good Supervisors. But in the 20 years I have been studying Culpeper from many angles, I can truthfully say I have never witnessed on that Board a better combination of temperament, judgment, and depth of experience than Brad Rosenberger. That is what the evidence tells me.
